The Hand In Hand Model
At Hand In Hand Childcare, our model centres on the importance of children feeling unconditional positive regard and the power of positive relationships, connection and co-regulation. We recognise that young people in our care may have developed negative self-concepts and painful feelings of shame as a result of their early experiences, and this in turn can lead to difficult behaviours.
Our focus on connection reduces feelings of shame, aids regulation, and provides a sense of safety for correction. These two hands of caregiving, Connection and Correction, are based on the Dr Daniel Hughes P.A.C.E. approach which prioritises playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy.

Connection
LOVE supports children to feel unconditional positive regard, and benefits mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
NURTURE physically changes the development of the brain, helping children to learn, play, communicate and thrive.

RELATIONSHIPS are key to children feeling safe and happy, and are powerful tools in recovery from traumatic experiences.

EMPATHY is crucial for forging and maintaining connections with others, and provides new perspectives on challenging behaviour.

ENGAGEMENT through active listening and sharing positive day-to-day experiences together facilitates the building of relationships.
Correction
EDUCATION through incidental learning is a fun and normal part of everyday interactions, and academic progress is supported.
ROUTINE and daily rhythms help to reduce anxiety, enable calmer transitions, increase cooperation, and improve emotional regulation.

BOUNDARIES are key to children's development, and are applied clearly and warmly to ensure safety and learning at all times.

CONSISTENCY makes children feel calmer and safer as they know what to expect, benefiting their responses and relationships.

STRUCTURE provides a sense of stability during stressful or uncertain times, with clear expectations and familiarity to fall back on.
